Boeing Partners With Qatar Airways and Non-Profits to Deliver Relief Supplies to Pakistan
EVERETT, Wash., Oct. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing (NYSE: BA) delivered to Qatar Airways its 12th Boeing 777-300ER (extended range). The new airplane was used in support of humanitarian efforts to deliver relief supplies to flood victims in Pakistan.
Boeing, Qatar Airways and two non-profit agencies, AmeriCares and International Medical Corps, collaborated to bring relief goods to residents in the regions of Pakistan recently devastated by massive flooding caused by torrential rainfall. With the help of the two agencies, Boeing and Qatar Airways loaded nearly 35,000 pounds (15.8 metric tons) of medicine and medical supplies into the cargo hold of the airline's new 777-300ER.
"Boeing, through its Global Corporate Citizenship organization, supports disaster response around the world in partnership with nongovernmental agencies and nonprofits, such as AmeriCares and International Medical Corps. Through these collaborative efforts we bring relief to thousands of people still suffering from the devastating floods and other disasters," said Liz Warman, Global Corporate Citizenship Northwest director.
"Qatar Airways believes humanitarian efforts are part of its mission," said Akbar Al Baker, CEO of Qatar Airways. "The delivery of relief goods to nations in need is inherent to our mission as a global airline and a facilitator of the State of Qatar's relief aid program," said Al Baker, who authorized the delivery flight. "Qatar Airways has a strong record in supporting humanitarian initiatives, having sent humanitarian aid to victims of the 2006 tsunami in South-East Asia and to Darfur in Sudan. The airline sent three cargo plane loads of humanitarian aid to Gaza in 2008/09 as well as assisted in re-building efforts in Sichuan, China, and Pakistan following the recent devastating earthquakes."
Over the years, Boeing and airline partners as well as non-profit partners have collaborated on many humanitarian missions. The Boeing 777-300ER was used on a number of those missions.
Qatar Airways, the flag carrier of Qatar, began operations in 1994 and matured into one of the most competitive and fastest growing airlines in the world. The airline shares a strong relationship with Boeing and currently operates 21 Boeing 777s including freighters and passenger airplanes.
