    The T-28 Trojan first flew on Sept. 24, 1949, and had tricycle-type landing gear. It was the first trainer designed to transition pilots to jet aircraft. The Navy (@usnavy) ordered 792 T-28s, 299 of which included an arrester hook for carrier landings.

    On April 15, 1948, newspapers all over the world published this picture of a Boeing B-47 performing a jet-assisted takeoff (JATO).
    The six-engine Boeing B-47 was America’s first multi-engine swept-wing jet bomber. Its thin 116-foot (35-meter) wing was extraordinarily flexible and swept back at a 35-degree angle. Eighteen small rocket units in the fuselage provided JATO, and parachutes cut its landing speeds.

    The McDonnell F2H Banshee made its first flight on Jan. 11, 1947. The F2H could climb at a rate of 9,000 feet (2,743 meters) per minute, nearly twice that of other aircraft of the day.
