Today’s #TBT looks at Boeing’s role producing every Minuteman ICBM at US Air Force Plant 77
After Minuteman I, #Boeing continued ICBM production at Plant 77 with Minuteman II, which had greater range and increased targeting flexibility, and in August 1965, shipped the first Minuteman II by train from Plant 77 to the 321st Strategic Missile Wing.
By April 1967, 1,000 Minuteman ICBMs – I and II – were operational and installed at six launch sites.
The Minuteman ICBM – a long-range, three-stage, solid-fueled strategic missile – is the ground-based, silo-launched element of the nuclear deterrence triad. Plant 77 was the final assembly site for all Minuteman ICBMs, including Stage 2 shown here.
