Boeing to Enhance Ocean Monitoring in the Pacific Northwest

Boeing [NYSE: BA] has been selected by the Northwest Association of Networked Ocean Observing Systems (NANOOS) to further develop ocean observing and modeling capabilities that help monitor and predict marine conditions in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States.

Under a three-year, $8.5 million grant awarded to NANOOS by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Boeing's Network Centric Operations Capabilities and Emerging Markets team will serve as system architect for the Data Management and Communication component of the regional system.

NANOOS, the Pacific Northwest's regional association of the nation's planned Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS), is responsible for addressing ocean observing and prediction needs of users in Washington, Oregon and northern California, with links to British Columbia and Alaska observing programs. NANOOS will leverage federal, local and private observing systems to deliver information as a non-federal component of the IOOS.

"This is a wonderful opportunity to apply Boeing's capabilities to an emerging market where access to timely information serves a diverse community of users," said Vic Sweberg, Boeing Advanced Systems director of Network Centric Operations Capabilities and Emerging Markets. "NANOOS delivers products and services that Pacific Northwest users need to make responsive and responsible decisions in the priority areas of maritime operations, fisheries, ecosystem impacts and coastal hazards. It is gratifying to serve users whose decisions impact and protect our environment."

NANOOS collects and disseminates coastal ocean and estuary data and products to help monitor and predict ocean conditions, protect coastline and marine ecosystems, warn of public health risks, mitigate natural hazards, improve the safety and efficiency of marine operations, and support national security efforts.

The NANOOS team includes oceanographic, modeling and information systems experts from the University of Washington, Oregon State University, the Oregon Health and Science University, and representatives from Washington and Oregon state governments.

Boeing's Network Centric Operations Capabilities and Emerging Markets team, part of Boeing Advanced Systems' Integrated Defense and Security Solutions organization, integrates "best-of-enterprise" and "best-of-industry" capabilities to develop and provide network-centric solutions for a wide variety of government and civilian applications.
