Boeing [NYSE:BA] selected Hamilton Sundstrand to provide the electric motor hydraulic pump subsystem for the
7E7 Dreamliner, the eighth system on the all-new airplane that's been awarded to the Connecticut-based company.
The electric motor arrangement is part of a new approach to generating onboard power that makes the 7E7 more reliable and efficient than today's airplanes. On the 7E7, the large direct current (DC) electric motor operates with engine-driven pumps to generate hydraulic power. Other airplanes rely on a less-efficient diversion of bleed air from the airplane's engines. The 7E7 is the first commercial jetliner with such an electric-motor arrangement, and without a bleed air system.
"Hamilton Sundstrand is helping us find the solutions that will make the 7E7 an effective and efficient tool for the world's airlines" said Mike Bair, vice president and general manager of the 7E7 program for Boeing. "Together we and our partners are focused on efficiency that will lead to lower costs for airlines, provide a better flying experience for passengers and have improved environmental performance."
Earlier this year, Boeing chose Hamilton Sundstrand to supply the 7E7's environmental control system, the electric power generating and start system, the remote power distribution system, the auxiliary power unit, the primary power distribution system, the nitrogen generation system and the emergency power system.
"This latest selection by Boeing demonstrates our ability to integrate end-to-end power systems across the airplane" said Hamilton Sundstrand President Ron McKenna. "We will provide an innovative solution starting with the power-generating source, through the distribution and localized power conversion to the individual high-power electrical loads -- a first for a new aircraft development program."
Launched in April 2004, the 7E7 is a family of three airplanes, all of which will use the same engine type. The 7E7-8 Dreamliner will carry 217 passengers in three-classes of seating with a range of up to 8,500 nautical miles (15,700 kilometers). The 7E7-3, a model of the 7E7-8 optimized for shorter flights, will carry 289 passengers in two-class seating on ranges up to 3,500 nautical miles (6,500 kilometers). The 7E7-9, a longer version of the 7E7-8, will carry 257 passengers in three classes with a range of 8,300 nautical miles (15,400 kilometers).
The Dreamliner will provide passengers with a better flying experience, including an improved cabin environment with more room and more conveniences.
