Goodrich Providing Boeing 7E7's Proximity Sensing System

Boeing [NYSE:BA] is increasing Goodrich Corporation's participation on the 7E7 Dreamliner by adding its proximity-sensing system to the all-new passenger airplane.

The system monitors the positions of the airplane's landing gear and thrust reverser components, and determines whether the passenger, cargo and access doors are closed.

"Fifty years ago, Goodrich proximity systems flew on our Dash 80, the airplane that helped lead commercial aviation into the jet age," said Boeing 7E7 Senior Vice President Mike Bair. "Now, Goodrich will provide its modern, innovative proximity systems for the 7E7, the next Boeing airplane that will change commercial aviation."

The proximity system is Goodrich's fourth 7E7 work package. Earlier this year the company was chosen to provide the airplane's nacelles and thrust reversers, fuel quantity indicating system, and fuel management software.

Goodrich's Fuel & Utility Systems division, based in Vergennes , VT. , will design and manufacture the proximity systems.

"We're very pleased by Boeing's decision," said Cindy Egnotovich, Goodrich's segment president of Electronic Systems. "We're looking forward to delivering this technology on the 7E7."

Launched in April, the 7E7 is a family of three airplanes, all of which will use the same engine type. The 7E7-8 Dreamliner, with a range of up to 8,500 nautical miles (15,700 kilometers), will carry 217 passengers in three seating classes. The 7E7-3, a model of the 7E7-8 optimized for shorter flights, will carry 289 passengers in two-class seating up to 3,500 nautical miles (6,500 kilometers). The 7E7-9, a longer version of the 7E7-8, will carry 257 passengers in three classes up to 8,300 nautical miles (15,400 kilometers).

The Dreamliner will provide passengers with a better flying experience that's highlighted by an improved cabin environment with more room and more conveniences.
