Boeing Executive Named Corporate Counsel of the Year

Valerie K.Schurman, vice president and assistant general counsel for Boeing Integrated Defense Systems, has received the Corporate Counsel of the Year award from the Southern California Chapter of the American Corporate Counsel Association.

Schurman, who was appointed to her position in July, is responsible for providing comprehensive legal representation for Boeing Integrated Defense Systems, a $23 billion business unit of The Boeing Company [NYSE:BA], one of the world's largest aerospace and defense companies.

Prior to her current appointment, Schurman served as vice president and assistant general counsel of Boeing Space and Communications. She has filled a variety of legal positions within Boeing since joining the company in 1984, including service as counsel in the company's office in Washington, D.C. and with the litigation section at then company headquarters in Seattle. She also served as director of contract policy for Boeing Defense & Space Group, where she was responsible for U.S. government acquisition policies and procedures affecting elements of Boeing engaged in U.S. government business.

Before joining Boeing, Schurman was an assistant U.S. attorney in the civil division of the Office of the U.S. Attorney in Washington D.C.

She holds a bachelor's degree from Smith College and is a graduate of the National Law Center, The George Washington University. Schurman is a member of the American Corporate Counsel Association; the American Bar Association; and the California, Washington State, and District of Columbia bar associations. She has served on the program committee for the annual Government Contracts Western Briefing Conference in San Francisco for several years. She also serves on the Board of Project Tomorrow, a non-profit partnership of business and educational leaders dedicated to improving Orange County schools. She and her family live in Huntington Beach.

The American Corporate Counsel Association is the in-house bar association, serving the professional needs of attorneys who practice in the legal departments of corporations and other private sector organizations. The association promotes the common interests of its members, contributes to their continuing education, seeks to improve understanding of the role of in-house attorneys, and encourages advancements in standards of corporate legal practice. Since its founding in 1982, ACCA has grown to 13,000 members representing more than 6,000 corporations in 42 countries, with 43 chapters.

The Southern California Chapter of ACCA represents the professional interests of over 700 in-house counsel throughout Orange, Los Angeles, Ventura and Santa Barbara counties, and portions of Riverside and San Bernardino counties. In 1996, 1999, and 2001, ACCA-SoCal was recognized by ACCA as the "Outstanding Large Chapter in America" due to its exemplary leadership and service to it
