The Boeing Company today named Paul Walters to the new position of regional vice president, Southeast Asia, The Boeing Company. Walters will be responsible for coordinating all company business activities in a number of countries in the region.

"Asia is a vibrant, growing economic power and home to an increasing number of important customers and partners. Paul will help us to further develop these relationships," said Phil Condit, chairman and chief executive officer -- The Boeing Company.

Based in Kuala Lumpur at the Boeing-Southeast Asia headquarters, Walters will help expand Boeing's profile and presence in the region beyond Singapore and Malaysia, where Boeing is now well-represented. Walter's mission is to lead and facilitate Boeing's strategy and globalization process in Southeast Asia.

Boeing works closely with Asian aerospace industry organizations and the region's armed forces and leading airlines. From a manufacturing joint venture in Malaysia, to commercial airplane sales in Thailand and Vietnam and satellite sales in Indonesia, Boeing business interests in the region are numerable and growing.

Most recently, Walters was vice president-Asia, Boeing Space Systems International Service Company, the international marketing division of Boeing Satellite Systems, and a subsidiary of The Boeing Company, based in Kuala Lumpur.

Walters retired from the U.S. Senior Foreign Service in 1995 to join the Government Investment Management Corporation as managing director for Asia. He joined Hughes Electronics International Corporation in 1996 as regional director, Southeast Asia for Telecommunications Business Development. Boeing purchased Hughes Space and Communications in October 2000.

Walters' international experience began with his entry into the Peace Corps in Malaysia, then to the U.S. Agency for International Development in Vietnam. His career in the U.S. Foreign Service spanned a range of senior commercial and economic assignments in U.S. embassies in Kenya, Malaysia, the Philippines, Hong Kong and Indonesia. He also served as an international economist in the U.S. State Department.

Born in Columbus, Ohio, in 1944, Walters graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Ohio State University in 1966. In 1979, he graduated from an Advanced Course in Economics from the U.S. Department of State Foreign Service Institute.
