SOLAR CELL SUCCESS - A technician at Boeing's Spectrolab, Inc., subsidiary examines a concentrator receiver assembly containing the company's highly efficient solar cells. Spectrolab's triple-junction terrestrial concentrator solar cell, shown in the inset photo, has been named one of the 100 most significant technologies of 2001 by Research & Development Magazine. Assembled into concentrator receivers similar to the one shown here, these one-centimeter-square cells are able to convert more than 34 percent of the sun's power to electricity, a record-breaking efficiency milestone that could help to dramatically lower the cost of solar electricity generation.
