The Boeing Standoff Land Attack Missile Expanded Response(SLAM-ER), one of the world's premier precision strike weapons, has been approved by the U.S. government for sale to the Republic of Korea.

With this approval, the Republic could become the first non-U.S. SLAM-ER customer. The weapon, which Boeing produces for the U.S. Navy, utilizes Global Positioning System data and an infrared seeker with an advanced data link for precise attacks against targets on land or at sea from long ranges. Its range exceeds 150 nautical miles (278 kilometers).

"Boeing is pleased that Korea, with whom we have a long and valued partnership, may be the first international customer for SLAM-ER," said Mike Marks, Boeing vice president and general manager for U.S. Air Force Fighter and Bomber Programs, and Weapons Programs. "SLAM-ER is an excellent weapon that provides long-range strike capability around the clock in virtually any weather. It would add even more modern combat power to the F-15K."

The Republic is considering the F-15K, an improved version of the F-15E flown by the U.S. Air Force, as part of its F-X fighter competition. The F-15K is the only airplane being evaluated that could meet, with the first airplane delivered, the requirements set for the F-X.

The F-15K is the only airplane being considered that can carry the SLAM-ER.

In addition to SLAM-ER, the U.S. government has previously approved for use on the F-15K the Boeing Joint Direct Attack Munition, AGM-130 and Harpoon Block II missiles as well as the Joint Helmet-Mounted Cueing System, which a Boeing-led team produces. Other systems that the F-15K could carry include the Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missile, the AIM-9X Sidewinder missile and the Joint Stand-off Weapon.
