Former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General John Shalikashvili Elected to Boeing Board of Directors

Gen. John M. Shalikashvili, 63, former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the Department of Defense, has been elected to the board of directors of The Boeing Company.

The announcement of the election results was made by Phil Condit, Boeing chairman and chief executive officer, during the company's annual meeting held today in Huntsville, Ala. "Because of his wealth of experience in the military and government, Gen. Shalikashvili will be an outstanding addition to the Boeing board," said Condit. "He also brings broad international and global policy experience to this key position."

Since leaving the chairmanship of Joint Chiefs of Staff in September 1997, Shalikashvili has been a visiting professor with the Institute for International Studies, Stanford University, and a senior adviser to the Stanford-Harvard Prevention Defense Project at the Center for International Security and Cooperation, Stanford University. He also serves as a special advisor to the Secretary of State and to the President on the ratification of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty.

Shalikashvili served as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from October 1993 through September 1997. In that position, he was the senior officer of the U.S. military and principal advisor to the President of the United States, the Secretary of Defense and the National Security Council. Prior to that he served as NATO's Supreme Allied Commander, Europe and also as the commander-in-chief, United States European Command from June 1992 until October 1993. Shalikashvili currently serves on the boards of Frank Russell Trust Company, L-3 Communications Holdings Inc., Plug Power Inc. and United Defense Industries Inc.

Shalikashvili received his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Bradley University and a master's degree in international affairs from George Washington University. His military education includes completion of the Naval Command and Staff College and the United States Army War College. He was born on June 27, 1936 in Warsaw, Poland.

Shalikashvili will be in the class of board members whose term expires in the year 2003. He has been appointed to serve on the board's Audit and Finance Committee.
