The Greater Philadelphia chapter of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc. (AIAA) will present the AIAA 1999 Young Engineer Achievement Award to Boeing aerodynamicist Robert J. Mayer during an award ceremony on May 27.

Mayer will be recognized for "significant leadership and contributions to the V-22 flight test program." The award is presented annually to an engineer under 35 years of age "for outstanding achievement or sustained excellence" in a variety of technical disciplines related to the aerospace industry.

Mayer, a technical specialist in the aerodynamics group at Boeing in Philadelphia, joined the company in 1990. He currently leads the V-22 Performance Demonstration flight test program, working in Philadelphia and at the U.S. Naval Air Warfare Center in Patuxent River, Md. Mayer also has pursued a wide range of activities in aerodynamics, including preliminary design and wind tunnel testing.

"I am honored to be recognized by the AIAA," said Mayer, "and am fortunate to work for a company that allows me to follow my interests and work to my full capacity."

The AIAA has been the principal society of aerospace engineers and scientists for nearly 70 years. Today, AIAA has more than 31,000 professional members in its 65 sections and 5,500 student members in 145 student branches, with 56 domestic and international corporate members and more than 3,000 members in foreign countries.

The Boeing Company in Philadelphia designs, develops and produces world-class military helicopters and tiltrotor aircraft. Its products include the CH-47SD Chinook, the AH-64D Apache Longbow, and, in partnership with Sikorsky and Bell, respectively, the RAH-66 Comanche and the V-22 Osprey.
