Boeing Modification Unit Receives ISO-9000 Certification

Boeing Airplane Services announced today it has received ISO-9000 certification, an international quality designation, from BSI, Inc., the North American division of the British Standards Institution (BSI), for its Modification Center in Wichita, Kan.

The certification by BSI, Inc., which is recognized as the world's leading registrar of quality management systems, follows an extensive examination of Wichita's quality and manufacturing systems.

"We are very excited about our ISO-9000 designation," said Vic McMullen, Modification Center director. "This is one of the highest industry awards for quality.

"Achieving an ISO-9000 designation also recognizes the people at Boeing Wichita and validates our belief that we offer the best products and services in the world. More importantly, it demonstrates to our customers around the globe that Wichita's commercial modification program is a world-class operation," McMullen said.

BSI, Inc., Client Manager John Rogers said, "By earning ISO-9000 certification, the Boeing commercial Modification Center is further demonstrating its commitment to quality. By formalizing its documentation and using ISO-9000 as an extra set of eyes, Boeing Wichita will be able to continue to improve quality and remain at the cutting edge of the industry. The company has committed employees and well-organized processes - ISO-9000 certification can only serve to improve an already top-of-the-line business."

Founded in 1901, BSI has issued over 32,500 registrations in over 70 countries, and is a founding member of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). BSI also facilitated and published the first commercial standards to address quality, environmental, and occupational health and safety management systems. BSI, Inc., was established in 1991 and is headquartered in Reston, Va., with nine offices throughout the U.S., and two in Mexico to serve the North American market.

The Wichita Modification Center specializes in wide-bodied airplane modifications and maintenance and is part of Boeing Airplane Services, a new business dedicated to engineering and modification services.

Boeing Airplane Services also offers engineering retrofit packages, avionics upgrades, interior reconfigurations, recovery and repair services, and airplane performance improvements for all Boeing commercial airplanes. It also provides technical consulting and general contracting support for passenger and cargo airlines.

Since 1972, the Wichita Modification Center has modified 88 Boeing 747 airplanes to freighter/cargo configuration and has also converted a 747 into the NASA shuttle carrier aircraft.

In addition to providing 747 freighter conversions, the unit performs DC-10/MD-11 passenger-to-freighter work and other modifications that enhance commercial airplane performance and productivity.
