Boeing Commercial Airplane Group today confirmed an order by Federal Express Corp. for three Boeing MD-11 freighter jets.
These MD-11Fs will be powered by Pratt & Whitney engines. The first delivery is scheduled for March 1999; the remaining two will follow in June. In June 1991, FedEx became the first operator to put the MD-11F into service.
MD-11F advantages include extended intercontinental range, low fuel burn per trip, unrestricted over-water operation, and high take-off weights. The all-cargo trijet provides the capacity for 202,100-pound (91,670 kilograms) gross payloads and has a 98.25-inch (249.5 centimeters) maximum stack height.
To date, 178 MD-11s have been delivered.
