Student, Parent Open House To Conclude Boeing Summer Science Camp

The Boeing Company will conclude its sixth annual Discover Engineering Summer Science Camp with an open house for camp students and their parents at noon this Saturday, Aug. 9, at the company's Downey facility.

More than 270 children ages 9 to 17 representing 70 Southern and Central California cities have spent the past two weekends participating in "hands-on" science, math and engineering workshops taught by Boeing engineers.

Margarita Colmenares, U.S. Department of Education corporate liaison director, will join Boeing Space Systems Division President Robert G. Minor in addressing an expected crowd of 1,500 students, parents and family members. Colmenares is an advocate for public-private-independent partnerships that accelerate education improvements across the nation. She is a former environmental engineer and past national president of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers.

"Boeing is an excellent example of the important role employers play in the Department of Education's program, 'America Goes Back to School,'" she said.

"The leadership role of Boeing in developing and implementing their Summer Science Camp program shows their commitment to students improving their math and science skills. The Boeing Science Camp is a reflection of what could be happening across the country with other companies also making a positive difference in preparing students for the challenges they will face as we shift to an information and technology economy," she said.

The free camp is made possible through thousands of volunteer hours by Boeing engineering and technical support personnel. The camp was established in 1992 to spark young people's natural inquisitiveness in the areas of math, science and engineering and to encourage them to actively pursue careers in these fields.

The open house will showcase student projects for parents, family, friends and visiting dignitaries. A career day, held in cooperation with other corporations and educational institutions, will provide students and parents with information on career opportunities.
