Boeing [NYSE: BA] is increasing the deployment of its Visual Security Operations Console (VSOC) Sentinel™ system for the Denver Regional Transportation District (RTD).

This second phase deployment of VSOC will enhance the capabilities of security surveillance cameras, video and alarm systems at 13 RTD commuter light rail stations, in addition to four stations that tested VSOC previously. The VSOC system will provide around-the-clock situational awareness for security personnel monitoring light rail parking lots and passenger facilities.

VSOC, a product of Boeing Advanced Systems' Integrated Defense and Security Solutions (IDSS), is being integrated into the Denver RTD's Transportation Expansion, or "T-REX," Project, which will combine light rail, highway, bicycle, pedestrian and other transit options to relieve traffic congestion in and around the Denver metro area.

"Our VSOC solution is increasing the operational effectiveness of the Denver RTD security team as well as providing a higher level of safety for light rail passengers," said Pam Drew, vice president and general manager of Boeing IDSS. "Supporting such a large scale transformational effort as Denver's T-REX Project is an example of how Boeing IDSS is enabling customers to innovate their security operations without having to invest in costly and complex technology."

Boeing's VSOC Sentinel includes enterprise software, 3D geospatial databases, systems configuration, and customer hardware and software integration services. The system is based on a common backbone of network-centric back-end servers coupled with geospatially-enabled graphical user interface front-end clients for integration with customer-specific equipment and systems.

The T-REX Project is a $1.67 billion venture that is transforming the way people in the Denver metro area travel along the southeast corridor of Interstates 25 and 225.

"The appeal of VSOC is the way it brings our system to life," said Michael Sinclair, Denver RTD security systems administrator. "We have replaced the traditional displays of individual cameras with a representative microcosm of our alignment. Anyone can sit down at a console and navigate their way through our rail system, always knowing where they are and understanding what they are seeing. Operator training is no longer an issue. The software operates flawlessly."

T-REX is a five-year, design-build project that is adding 19 miles of light rail and improving 17 miles of highway through southeast Denver, Aurora, Greenwood Village, Centennial and Lone Tree, Colo. The unprecedented project is the result of a unique collaboration between industry and Colorado's Department of Transportation and RTD, the Federal Highway Administration and the Federal Transit Administration.

The VSOC deployment is part of a potential multi-year effort with the Denver RTD. VSOC is currently being deployed for the U.S. Department of State and is being developed for additional civilian and government applications.
