The next Boeing Delta II launch will play a role in achieving an important operational milestone -- completing a 52-satellite launch program for the global telecommunications company Globalstar L.P.
The launch, scheduled for 3:54 p.m. EST, Feb. 8 from Space Launch Complex 17B at Cape Canaveral Air Station, Fla., will send four spares into orbit to join the 48 main satellites that comprise the Globalstar global mobile satellite network. There is a 30-minute launch window.
With its satellite infrastructure now complete, Globalstar is focusing on launching worldwide service.
The launch will be the 276th for the Delta family of expendable launch vehicles and the first Delta mission in 2000.
"Delta II rockets have carried 24 Globalstar satellites into orbit," said Darryl Van Dorn, Boeing director for NASA and Delta II commercial programs. "We are proud of our partnership with Space Systems/Loral and Globalstar," he added.
The Delta II is manufactured in Huntington Beach, Calif., with final assembly in Pueblo, Colo., and is powered by the RS-27A engine built by Boeing in Canoga Park, Calif. Alliant Techsystems, Magna, Utah, builds the graphite epoxy motors for boost assist. Aerojet, Sacramento, Calif., manufactures the second-stage engine, and L3 Communications Space & Navigation (formerly known as AlliedSignal), Teterboro, N.J., builds the guidance and flight control system.
Since the first flight of the Delta II series in 1987, the rockets have compiled a 97 percent launch success rate.

Photographers who wish to set up remote cameras for the launch should meet at Pass and ID, CCAS, south gate at 7 a.m. EST Feb. 8.
Accredited media wishing to view the launch from Press Site 1 will depart Pass and ID at 3 p.m. EST Feb. 8.
Boeing and Space Systems/Loral will host a live satellite broadcast beginning at 3:40 p.m. EST Feb. 8. The domestic Ku-band transmission will be on Telstar 7, transponder 12. The polarity is horizontal. The downlink frequency will be 11.940 GHz. Telstar 7 is located at 129 degrees west.
The European satellite broadcast will be carried on Intelsat K, on transponder H6 lower. The polarity is horizontal. The downlink frequency will be 11,531.5 MHz. The satellite is located at 338.5 degrees east. This is an analog signal; the audio is 27 MHz.
Bars and tone will be broadcast starting at 3 p.m. EST.
