2nd Boeing GPS IIF Satellite Sends 1st Signals from Space
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla., July 16, 2011 -- Boeing [NYSE: BA] has received the first on-orbit signals from the second of 12 Global Positioning System (GPS) IIF satellites it is building for the U.S. Air Force. In this photo, a United Launch Alliance Delta IV rocket blasts off from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station's Space Launch Complex-37 today at 2:41 a.m. Eastern time with the GPS IIF-2 payload. This launch marks the 50th successful GPS launch on a Delta vehicle. GPS IIF-2 will join a worldwide timing and navigation system using 24 satellites in six different planes, with a minimum of four satellites per plane, positioned in orbit approximately 11,000 miles above the Earth's surface. The GPS IIF series provides improved accuracy and enhanced performance for GPS users.
