The first converted MD-11 freighter for United Parcel Service (UPS) makes a stop at Boeing Field in Seattle Oct. 6, 2001, on its way to Louisville, Ky., where it will be formally introduced to the UPS fleet Oct 9. Louisville is the headquarters for UPS' airline operations.

The airplane is the first of 13 MD-11s that Boeing will acquire and Singapore Technologies Aerospace Ltd (ST Aero) will convert from a passenger airplane to a freighter for UPS. The conversion work was performed in Paya Lebar, Singapore, by ST Aero's subsidiary, SASCO. The entire program, including design, conversion and maintenance, was successfully completed in less than 12 months. Two more converted MD-11s are scheduled for delivery to UPS by the end of October 2001.
