U.S. Air Force Receives 49th Boeing C-17 Globemaster III

The 49th Boeing C-17 Globemaster III cargo aircraft was delivered to the U.S. Air Force in a short ceremony here on April 22. An aircrew from the Defense Contract Management Command flew it to Charleston Air Force Base Air Force Base, S.C.

This marked the 37th consecutive C-17 delivered ahead of schedule by the Boeing Airlift and Tanker Programs, recipients of the prestigious Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award.

The Globemaster III is actively involved in current operations in Yugoslavia. In addition to humanitarian aid shipments, more than 150 C-17 sorties are being flown from Ramstein Air Base, Germany, into Albania to support the deployment of U.S. Army Apache gunship helicopters.

The Air Force is buying 120 of the advanced airlifters that are capable of intercontinental flight carrying 85 tons and landing on short, austere airfields.
